RAAM - Staan

RAAM, Looking out, from the corridor to the window, to the viewing post, looking out again, standing in front of the window, always being on thelook-out, a visual and tangible form, usually not regarded as a barrier, one that serves as a shelter for the outside world and marks itself as“View on the World”, becomes a barrier here.

The window, a spot for looking out, looking out again and again.

Looking out onto, overlooking, this performance, articulated by waiting,by thinking about accumulating movements in time, but incorporating reflections on non-visible events, does not so much ferment trouble, but makes clear that life cannot be lived without the other.

Being on the lookout, peering to the right, away from green leaves being blown on by the wind, away from parked cars in the forefront of picture and cars flashing by in the street, away from the occasional passer-by;
this draws the picture of the outside world and the speed of life on the other side of the window, a common scene from daily life.

The recurring acts on 'our' side are being characterised by just the repetition; distinction in production is not important.

The number of steps to the window followed the undisturbed looking out constitute the distinction; a serene appearance shows inner turmoil.

This turmoil, which does not depend on outward differences, is made visible by 'motion in rest' and indicates primarily a longing for, and a feeling of responsibility.

The window, the barrier between the exterior and the interior, which mainly embodies the view outside, now acts as a figure of speech for anxiousness and responsibility.

TXTual Healing hits Bucharest...

Paul Notzold´s TXTual Healing, an SMS enabled interactive street performance that comes in a variety of different achievements, has been mentioned several times.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, 6th of June, at 9:30 pm Bucharest time (2:30 pm in NYC), TXTual Healing will be projected on a small street corner in Bucharest. (not the same spot pictured here)

To post a message from outside Romania send an SMS to: +40743344253 (include the + or it won't work)

Recently Accepted into the EU, Romania was already undergoing tremendous development. Everyone I have met has been beautiful and in tune with the world around them. Little is relayed about what is going on this part of the world, they want to be brought up to speed, but also wary of what development can mean to the loss of affordable housing and ownership of the streets. Wish them luck in their protection of public space and hopefully the ability to fight the disney-fication of their culture, or at least say hi from your part of the world.

The happening has been arranged through the Streetwise gallery At the same gallery at 8 pm I will be giving a talk on mobile phones, invented reality and public space interventions... check out the gallery site for more information.

Please don't spam the bubbles with URL's and any hate speech...

Alternative Play Station by Provmyza at Entr’ acte

Provmyza RU Alternative Play Station 11 min 45 s, DV, 2004

Alternative Play Station" is a title ironically subversive and at the same time positioning the idea of the work in the context of the practice and theory of games which have been acquiring special importance alongside the development of information technologies. In "Alternative Play Station", screened these days at Entr’ acte as part of Athens International Art Fair, Art Athina 2007, the artists, in a way, bring the reverse negative idea of the game to its logical maximum, depriving it of the purpose, shape, structure deriving at the same time and capturing the performances of naive movement unique in their suddenness and spontaneity. read more

Signs From God

The evolution of church marquees

The pun-laden signs you see outside churches have always intrigued me. "Seven days without prayer makes one weak." "Forbidden fruit creates many jams." "We have a prophet-sharing plan." They're funny and a little bit alien, if you're not a regular churchgoer. And it's hard to tell whether they're intended primarily to amuse regular congregants, or to attract soul-searching passers-by.
Doree Shafrir

Church signs have their roots in the needlepoint samplers produced by women in the early American republic. Mostly hung in parlors, they usually featured proverbs, biblical adages, or sayings from psalms and hymns.

naked buildings

Tagez Photo, known as Berlin´s darkest photo blog ever, previously featured here, has just reached it´s first year. In Katz years that means reaching the awkward adolescent phase, a promising outlook for a personal photo blog.

Here´s wishing Dan, the man behind Tagez photo, a belated Happy B-day

Beta Test Berlin Athens

George Drivas GR Beta Test 13 min, HD, 2005

Beta Test by Greece filmmaker George Drivas will be shown tonight in Berlin as part of Am Rande (see post below) and in Athens as part of Entr’ acte at the Art Athina (see two posts below)

Using only black and white still photography and subtitles as the narration, George Drivas film, Beta Test, shown in world premiere at Directors Lounge 2006, is a most enigmatic and thought provoking short in the tradition of Chris Marker's 1962 film, La Jetee. The film explores the mind of a man, a woman and a city by looks at urbanity, communication and the feeling of non-existence. Beta test is a love story. And it could happen to everyone.

It is all about what we don’t see; it is about hidden feelings, acts beyond time and movement, unspoken words beyond speech. It is when everything around us seems to stop, when everything loses its usual importance and a strong sense of emptiness settles in and gives us the feeling that the only thing we can see or hear is ourselves. George Drivas
