Underworld Cinema: The Life and Work of J.X. Williams

"Peep Show"

J.X. Williams: Wrapped in an Enigma. If the filmmaker J. X. Williams didn’t exist, someone would have had to invent him..
An exploitation filmmaker with a storied past, Williams is credited as director of the 1965 documentary “Peep Show” - a kind of spiritual vortex of sub rosa Americana surrounding the Kennedy assassination. After supposedly being suppressed for decades, it was recently shown at the Anthology Film Archives in New York, the Film Forum in Los Angeles and a handful of other museum, gallery and festival settings throughout the United States and Europe…

still from "Peep Show"

Shot in stark black-and-white and augmented with copious archival film, “Peep Show” tells a tangled tale of a rigged 1960 election, secret C.I.A. training camps in the Florida outback, sex stings in Mafia hotels and a little-known Mob plot to addict Frank Sinatra to heroin.
Noel Lawrence, who offers his title as curator of the J. X. Williams Archive in San Francisco serves as a kind of one-man advocate for Williams. According to Mr. Lawrence’s spiel, Williams’s résumé reads as a RKO mail-room flunky, closet Communist, abortive House Un-American Activities Committee witness, Mafia gofer, pioneer of mobbed-up stag loops, ghostwriter of some of the blacklist era’s greatest films and incidental avatar of experimental cinema. Williams, as the story goes, has spent the last quarter-century in Zurich in self-imposed exile, leaving Mr. Lawrence to serve as a Robert Maheu figure to his shadowy late-stage Howard Hughes.

Psych-Burn (1968)

J.X. Williams’ lost masterpiece “The Virgin Sacrifice” (1970)

Tomorrow, Sunday 8th, film curator and archivist Noel Lawrence will share a few of the surviving artifacts of Williams´ tawdry career at the 5th Berlin International Directors Lounge. He also will be previewing excerpts from his forthcoming documentary, "J.X. Williams L.A." which chronicles the misadventures of the mad auteur in Hollywood.

German Coziness • Deutsche Gemuetlichkeit

German Gemutlichkeit, a series of photographs, developed with silver gelantine emulsion on wall papers, deals with German cosiness after WW II, when the two Germanies tried to get back to “normality” through the “Wirtschaftswunder” in the West and integration into a pretendingly international socialist world in the East. A clever combination or contradiction of different layers by Joachim Seinfeld. In his own words: "I mix wall paper designs from a decade with photographs dating from a different one. Thus it becomes possible to show that in the context of “German Cosiness” through the time not that much has changed. This is proved by the bafflement the combinations create: you very often don’t know when the picture was taken."
German Coziness will be on display at arthouse, Venice, CA from 24th of January as part of the LA /Berlin group exhibition (next to blog darlings like Stefanie Schneider).

Poisonous Pulchritude: The world of Julia Murakami

Julia Murakami´s Anatomy of a fairy tale, miniatures in little glass cases, take a butcher at the atrocity of well known fairy tales. The Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and the Little Mermaid retold by tiny, precious sculptures with a sinister shift. Saving grace does not exist for the slaughtered ladies in the realm of Julia Murakami. Broken beauties that will never come back. Frozen crime scenes scattered with pieces of evidence. Julia Murakami, herself a bewitching fairy, widens this field of tension between the fabulous and forensics by re-enacting her sites of crime. A lineup of photographs, as shot by an investigator, show the beauty herself as the victim of the creepy crimes. Thus the magical reflects back into the real, blurring the boundaries, straddling the real world and the sorcerous, a passage from fantasy to reality to fantasy. The delicate details of the dead belles are made by her own hair and blood. A possessed enchantress, perpetrator and victim, beauty and beast at once.
